Alpha-hydroxy Acid

face lotionIntroduction:

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are common in facial creams available over the counter and research on their use has produced evidence of improved skin appearance.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) benefits:

AHAs, facial skin tone, and wrinkles:

A study by Fried RG et al found significantly better facial skin tone and improvement in wrinkles with the use of AHAs. 32 individuals participated in a 12-week study on clinical and mental/social effects of AHAs used for skin rejuvenation and in chemical peels. Individuals were more satisfied with their physical appearance after developing better skin tone, less wrinkles, and improvement in the quality of their relationships after using AHAs. (1)

AHAs and skin quality:

improved the skin elasticity, thickness, collagen and may reduce inflammation. In a study by Ditre CM et al, AHAs were used for skin rejuvenation in subjects for an average of 6-months. Study participants applied cream containing 25% glycolic, lactic, or citric acid (common AHAs) to one forearm and a placebo lotion to the other forearm. At the end of treatment, a 25% increase in skin thickness was reported with use of AHAs. Additionally, increased acid mucopolysaccharides (a major component of skin), improved skin elasticity, and increased quantity of collagen were also reported with no signs of inflammation. (2)
