Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)


Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and sports performance: The Australian Sports Commission produced a review entitled “Supplements and Sports foods,” by Burke and Deakin which was published in Clinical Sports Nutrition, 4th ED. This source reviewed multiple studies in which coenzyme Q10 used for exercise performance. There was only 1 study out of 5 quality trials reviewed (although some were small trials) which showed an improvement in VO2 max during coenzyme Q10 supplementation and an increase in aerobic and anaerobic thresholds. The remaining studies reviewed showed lack of improvement in aerobic power, no effect on maximal oxygen uptake or muscle energy metabolism, minimal improvement of performance sustained through recovery.
