A small study on men with high cholesterol who ate 2 kiwi fruit per day for 8 weeks experienced the following (87):
- No change was seen in total or LDL cholesterol.
- HDL cholesterol increased significantly.
- Ratio of LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol and the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol decreased significantly.
- Levels of vitamin C and vitamin E increased significantly.
Areca-nut is associated with higher triglyceride levels:
Areca-nut chewing has been associated with oral diseases such as oral cancer, oral submucous fibrosis, and periodontal disease. The areca-nut provides a mild stimulant, causing a warming sensation in the body and slightly heightened alertness. However, research between 1991 and 2010 shows that chewing areca-nuts is associated with hyperglycemia, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, increased body mass, and higher triglyceride levels.
