Vitamin D and hypertension:
Goel RK found that subjects taking 33,000 IU of vitamin D every 2 weeks for 3 months plus standard therapy were noted to have a reduction in systolic blood pressure (BP) of 7.5 mm Hg compared to a 3.6 mmHg reduction in the standard therapy group, but diastolic BP in both groups increased by 2.1 mmHg and 1.3 mmHg, respectively. (107).
A double-blind randomized controlled trial of 148 women with a mean age of 74 years tested 1200 mg calcium plus 800 IU vitamin D3 and found that systolic blood pressure (SBP) decreased by 9.3% and heart rate by 5.4% compared with 1200 mg/day of calcium alone. 81% in the vitamin D3 and calcium group compared with 47% in the calcium group showed a decrease in SBP of 5 mm Hg or more.
