Omega-3 fish oil benefits in myocardial infarction and mortality:
A review of 14 randomized clinical trials reported that fish oil is associated with a reduction in total mortality and sudden death, but no significant reductions in nonfatal heart attacks were reported. Trials that included supplementation with the plant based alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) showed a possible benefit in reducing sudden death and nonfatal heart attack, but the results were not conclusive. A 3.5-year study including 11,324 myocardial infarction (MI) survivors with an MI occurring within 3 months) showed that fish oil supplementation at a dose of 1 gram daily, but not vitamin E at a dose of 300 mg daily, significantly reduced the total rate of all-cause death, nonfatal MI, and nonfatal stroke.
